The measurement range is one of the main characteristics that you need to pay attention to when choosing a laser level. Different devices are able to project laser beams at a distance from a few meters to hundreds of meters. If you buy a device for domestic use, and the distance to the object on which you want to make markup will be small, for example, in a room, then a model with a measurement range from 2 to 20 meters is sufficient. Firstly, such a model will cost significantly less professional, and secondly, less battery power will be spent on beam projection. When choosing a professional-grade laser level that will be used on large construction sites or open areas, pay attention to devices that can project beams at a distance of up to 50 meters or more.
Many devices can work with a receiver that allows you to see the beam at a distance exceeding the measurement range by two to three times. If you see a value in the characteristics, for example, 50/100 m, this means that the standard measurement distance is 50 meters. However, when buying a laser receiver, it will be possible to project the beam up to 100 meters away. If you see the designation “- / 5 m”, then note that this device is not designed to work with the receiver, and the radiation range will not be increased.
laser levels can project a different number of rays, and their direction will also be different. The simplest devices are able to lay one or two lines. In most cases, this is quite enough, for example, when carrying out finishing work, assembling furniture or placing shelves and paintings on the wall. When choosing a model with cross rays, pay attention to the opportunity to use the rays both together and separately. This will help save battery power, as well as reduce the chance of a laser beam accidentally getting into the eyes of a user who is in the projection area. A large number of rays is necessary when marking needs to be done on a large object or when several people work at once.

The main directions of the rays are horizontal and vertical, additional – right, left, as well as points: zenith, nadir, plumb. The more directions a laser level can create at the same time, the more work can be done on the object. For example, one worker drills holes in the wall, the other – in the ceiling.

Making a choice of a laser level, do not forget that for it, as well as for any measuring device, the admissible error is characteristic. This is inevitable, so the manufacturer must specify its value in the technical specifications. The error is calculated in millimeters per meter of laser beam, for example, +/- 0.8 mm / m or 0.2 mm / m. The smaller the value, the more accurately the instrument will project the markup line onto the object.
